Frequently Asked Question About Ayurvedic Medicines

What is Ayurveda, and what is its core philosophy?
Ayurveda, translated as “the science of life,” is an ancient Indian medical system that has been practiced for thousands of years. Its core philosophy is holistic: to cleanse the body and restore balance among the body, mind, and spirit, primarily through diet, herbal medicines, specialized exercise (like yoga), and lifestyle adjustments.
The Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) are the three principal biological energies or humors believed to govern all physiological, mental, and emotional functions in a person. A person’s unique ratio of these Doshas defines their individual constitution (Prakriti). Illness is viewed as an imbalance of these Doshas, and treatment is highly personalized to restore harmony.
Ayurvedic treatment is comprehensive and individualized, involving several modalities: Diet and Herbs: Specific dietary recommendations and complex herbal formulations (e.g., Turmeric, Ashwagandha, Triphala). Panchakarma: Internal cleansing procedures designed to eliminate toxins (ama). Mind-Body Practices: Specialized massage, meditation, and yoga.
While plant-based formulations are generally considered safe, there is a significant safety risk related to specific preparations. Some traditional mineral and metal-based formulations (Rasausadhi) may be intentionally or unintentionally contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, which can cause severe organ damage and neurological impairment.
Ayurvedic medicines are regulated in India under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940 by the Ministry of AYUSH. This ministry oversees safety, quality standards, and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
